A Healthier Me

I decided after looking at my abs, arms, and feeling lathargic a lot more than I should that my diet is in dire need of repair.  On Wednesday, I will give up sweets completely for forty days in hopes that I will crush my nasty, old sweet tooth once and for all while starting to see and feel a difference in my body.

For a Swedish Fish junkie like myself, this will by no means be easy.  Here are some of the ideas I have for combating my addiction and making over my sloppy, lazy diet.

"Pre-packaged" Snacks:  When I got home from the grocery store, I separated out foods into individual, serving-sized baggies.  My hope is that these will be just as easy to reach for as cookies (especially because there will be no more cookies in my house)
Creative Snacking:  There are so many good, healthy snack ideas that I just skipped over for an Oreo or two.  Here I have a Laughing Cow wedge--which I totally love--on some Great Harvest Bread Co Bread (no preservatives in this loaf, just real ingredients)
Cook More and Find Healthy Meals:  I made this Mac-and-Cheese the other night, surprising everyone--including myself!  I found it on Runnersworld.com.  Instead of a bunch of cream, milk, and cheeses, this recipe uses pureed cauliflower.  Find the recipe HERE; it will surprise you.  The Hubs LOVED it!

I am committed to a better diet--any tips?

  1. I have to do the portion control. It is a great first step. Also, start a food journal. Just the act of writing down everything you eat makes you eat better. I tend to walk past the candy jar at work knowing that I will have to WRITE IT DOWN.

When I really want to be on task, I will script my meals. It is not that hard but you then know that you are getting the calories and nutrients that you need – nothing more / nothing less.

  3. I'm glad I'm not Catholic because I really don't think I could give anything - like chocolate - up for 40 days. Maybe one year though, I'll give it a try. I love laughing cow cheese wedges. They are so good! Also, I made that same recipe back in February and thought it turned out pretty well. Glad you liked it too!

Another tip I always hear is to make sure to drink plenty of water. It keeps you full, because sometimes, we really think we're hungry, when in reality we're just thirsty! Crazy trick, isn't it?

  4. I'm trying to clean up my diet too. I've added a bunch of protein and am just focusing on getting quality foods in me. Good luck with the 40 days no sweets!

  5. Definitely lots of fruit...it helps me curb my sweet tooth. Things that are easy to snack are the best...grapes, apple slices, blueberries, etc. I also really like orange slices. Good luck!

  6. I'm right there with you...giving up sugar for Lent! The prepackaged snacks is huge! I'm going to try to do things to distract myself at night which is when I usually want sweets. Maybe I'll lose inches and get my scrapbooks up to date!!
